When Essie Mae Washington told her story about her father(Senator Thurmond), I said a whole lot of politicians down town in the Capitol probably were trembling. It is so many stories of this in our southern history of the aristocracy that it would be astounding to many whites. African Americans know these facts from oral tradition and family stories passed on to us. There are several such stories in my family tree. That is why the race issue seems so ludicrous to me.
